Introducing Kacey Jeffers
Read our interview with one of today's most promising emerging photographers
Greeting subscribers! The FFOTO team is excited to introduce you to Kacey Jeffers, an emerging photographer currently based in Nevis whose early obsession with fashion photography informs his approach to documentary portraiture. I invited Alexandra Gooding, an emerging arts professional originally from the Caribbean, to join me in conversation with Kacey about what drives his art practice. We cover a lot of ground in this fascinating interview — you’ll find it over at the FFOTO Blog.

Our interview with Kacey gives context to the Caribbean perspective represented in his compositions. His sensitive approach to portraiture lends a universal appeal to his photography — resulting in his series Every Day is Another Chance being shortlisted for the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards.
Kacey was forthcoming in our interview about the pull he feels between his life in Nevis and his desire to return to New York City to pursue his long-term goals. While the recent lockdown may have caused Kacey to delay his plans, the downtime has encouraged him to dive deep into his own motivations and, using his familiar surroundings, to explore his individual take on portrait photography.
Talking about his remarkable portrait project, Uniform, Kacey says:
“Uniform is specifically about conformity, but also about subtle acts of rebellion. The image with Juliska sitting on the desk, and she's blowing the bubble gum. I mean, to a person outside that context, they will be like, "Oh, it's such a good image," but there's so many more layers to that because she is being so defiant in that moment – sitting on a desk and chewing gum.”
The portraits in Uniform read as fashion editorial images while slyly subverting the rigid conformity that these garments seek to enforce. Kacey’s Uniform subjects show bravado, vulnerability, and perseverance — and heaps of star power, drawing coverage from Vogue, W, and AnOther Magazine.
“I think growing up in Nevis that I couldn't wait to leave. But until I came home in 2018 and I couldn't go anywhere, things really started to shift. And I guess that was me going much deeper within myself and wanting to upend a lot of what was at my foundation about creativity as well, because again, it was not something that I grew up thinking about. And I've definitely come to a place of understanding in how Nevis can play a role in my artistic journey and how I can mine memory and mine our culture and diasporic culture to tell stories that are human stories about human connection. And that can also change the perception of what it means to be from the Caribbean or to live a life in the Caribbean.” - Kacey Jeffers
There’s more to come from Kacey, including an in-person conversation slated for later this year, in collaboration with BAND Gallery and Cultural Centre. Stay tuned!
